I found two of these recently at a scrap yard with all mounting hardware and heatsinks and clamps and such. The only problem is that I can't find the data sheets anywhere! Even the manufacturers web search for discontinued parts doesn't have it! The other devices that look like mine on the Eupec site are rated over 1400v with 700amp average current, but I would like to have the actual data sheet and not have to guess rating. There are no engraved part numbers, just a sticker on the side. It reads....

Somewhere here I have some scr's like that, made by GE. In very large DC drives, scr's were changed if they failed an insulation resistance test done with a 600 volt megger. The issue with heatsinks we used was the critical torquing on the bolts used to press the puck between the halves. Whether or not the scr might have caused a problem with the leakage A-K was never known. Those big drives used to trip on an IOC fault (instantaneous Overcurrent) and started up after reset with no real apparent reason. We then would hook a 4 channel chart recorder up and look at that for a while. Certain stunts on the grid were avoided until the power control operators called the process operators to warn then.

the large gauge of wire going to the gate suggest that this may be a GTO thyristor, where a large negative pulse is sent to the gate to commutate conduction. Here at work we have a set of 750Kva VFDs that use this technology. Old but Robust.

To turn it on take the gate positive just like any other SCR. But it can be commutated by applying a negative pulse to the gate. I think most SCRs will commutate in this fashion but a GTO is made to take this "abuse". It also takes substantially more current to turn them off then to turn them on.
