I want to connect wires up to each of the three terminals on the 2.5mm Stereo Phono Plug shown below. But as you can semi-see in the picture, only the largest (base) terminal is solderable. The other two connections are two very small half-circles of metal rod surrounded by a semi-circle of plastic. I have tried soldering wire onto them but it will not stick and after a few seconds the plastic starts melting. Its like nothing I've seen before.
How do I go about connecting wires up to these terminals?

I've used those plug before, i think they're the radioshack type. just keep the heat on em, they'll solder in time. you'll hurt the plastic a bit, but only the plastic that is hidden inside the plug cover.

I've not seen that type before but in general, cheap connecors are nickel plated the nickel surface doesn't easily 'wet' with solder so you need to give a light rub with sandpaper etc (no need to remove the nickel, just get a fresh surface) Prepare the wires (correct length bare and tinned) Clamp the connector (it will get hot) With a clean iron tip, quickly apply the tip to the metal add a little solder hold the wire in place remove the soldring iron blow on the soldered joint to cool it quickly.
