Inside this ion chamber Card 847-1-2 0 this part , M1, shown. Is this an electromechanical modulator? It is a coil in a meter like structure in series with a 100 ohm resistor that seems to wave a wire around (perhaps dipped in radioemmiter) A test tickler ?

When this actuator operates it pulls on hairthin wire about 3 cm long that looks like the end is dipped in sone silver coloured paint. This cause the end to wave forward and then back.
Here is a photo of the detector outside its case. The card cage is below the large aluminum sealed cylinder with toe insulated feed throughs, each of which terminates on a seperate card that looks identical.

The Fluke Victoreen 440RFD, an ion chamber device, has an internal, mechanically operated, check source. In the 440RFD case, the check source is intended to produce a reading of 1.2 to 1.8 mR/h under test , and I think it likely that the possible check source in your apparatus would be of the same order.

Powering up the 847 is a bit down the road,:There may be some parts to surface, like a meter station and alarm console. Without a schematic it takes some more analysis, I could probe the little wire with a geiger counter although whatever it emits has to get through the aluminum chamber wall. My ancient geiger has a shuttered probe for beta and alpha. This 847 was last calibrated in 1987. The mounting on the housing looks the thing slid onto a bracket, perhaps on one side of a tank, with the source on the other side. If it was a nuclear level guage, the outut might be a 4-20 mA loop. Foxborough seems to link up on the net on sites mentioning 847s.
