I know in the UK they are perfectly legal to own, but the police can arrest you for possessing an offensive weapon if you brandish a rolled up newspaper at someone... So carrying one around in public is probably a bad idea.

I sent this question to Lawmail a for legal advice service for youth.

Wow what a great service! They've obviously taken trouble to find out what a coil gun actually is and given a common sense answer rather than just replying "Ohhh Dangerous, we don't understand it, don't do it!". In the UK at least, my experience is that as long as you tell anyone who might be affected what you're up to (neighbours, emergency services etc.) then there generally isn't a problem they may have legitimate concerns such as the effect of noise to pets/livestock which you can then hopefully discuss and work out a amicable solution. My neighbours are now quite used to the weird stuff that goes on in my back garden smile And in the case of the emergency services don't be surprised if they want to turn up and watch, they like a good bang!

It also helps to call it a "electromagnetic linear accelerator" rather than a guass/coil gun. That way any NIMBYs just think "meh sciencey stuff" rather than "AAAAAHH GUUUUUUUUUUUUN!!!!"

Lol, Thats what my friends mum thought so she forbid him from making one. Shame, he's a genius and it would be good to have someone else that I can talk to about EPA

I doubt anything would happen even IF you constructed an illegal one that was very large. I mean, these things are almost always stationary and the only way you'd get in trouble would be if someone called the police and you where trying to shoot them when comming in to search your house.

Even if the DID search your house, they'd have no idea what they had found, save for alot of wires and electrical components. This all assuming you have done something serious enough for them to bother. Flinging iron in your back yard is not such a thing.

I'm not saying you should construct one if it's illegal, but I can place a safe bet nobody would ever stop you f you did.
