Well, i have a couple dead Xbox360's mother boards (go figure it is an xbox360 -_-). I was of course curious, so i looked up some of the parts. Well, it has about 10 or more mosfets, that are rated for 20 volts and around 50-60 amps. They are surface mount, as you'd expect, and there are also a few SMD mosfet high/low side drivers.

What i am wondering is what function can mosfets possibly have in an Xbox360? I would imaging they are passing a fair bit of current, probably in the amp range, wouldn't you think? Just something i am really pondering.

That's right. The CPU / GPU cores run at voltages below 2V and when you think about state of the art multicore CPUs with TDP of 130W, you get the idea of the current range when the core runs at 1.5V or less. You can only do this step-down conversion onboard.

I modified an ATX power supply to put out 2.5V / 50A and the wires (for plus and GND 8 wires each) get warm. I have split off one cable so that I can measure the voltage drop along the 20cm cable to get a current reading. Well, you get the idea smile

FETs and wined toroids, right?
Buck converter so all the parts gets correct voltage, as already mentioned.
