I have a diffusion pump that won off eBay. It has roughly a 5in inner diameter. It has no marking at all indicating manufacturer or model. So my problem is how much oil to use in it and what kind? The only numbers are hand written and I assume they are some type of index from where it was used. Any insight at all will help!

You could try to search for Balzers or Varian and see if there is a similar pump. I think your pump there is a Balzers.
Basic pump oil is Dow 704 Silicone Oil. You may need 200 cc of this stuff at a heartbreaking $1 per cc!!
Really, you shouldn't bother getting oil yet until you have your poppet valves and your manifold all ready to go. The reason being is that you may not be able to get a head made for the pump and may have to re-sell it later. So try to see if you can get a gasket for it, vacuum manifold and valves, then worry about pumpdown when you're ready.

I have my other materials gathered so I think it's time for the oil! What would happen if I used too much or too little oil? This would only happen if I have to guess at how much I need to use.
