Hello. Here’s a slightly different design. The basic working principle is same as in a conventional air gun except the air compressing piston is driven electrically. I saw some older threads about this kind of gun but couldn’t find anything constructed so here’s a crude prototype.

The solenoid is a 6V starter solenoid powered by two 12V sealed lead acid batteries in series. Measured muzzle velocity for nicely fitting diodes and capacitors was 11-18 m/s. I think this is still quite nice performance considering the very suboptimal design of this thing. What do you think? It could be refined for a nice rapid fire peashooter at least.

Reminds me of the mechanism used to drive automatic air-soft guns.
Would it be more efficient to, instead of just actuating the plunger with a rod through the center of the solenoid, add a piece of pipe around the coil that is also attached to the plunger? I imagine that this would allow the magnetic field that occurs around the coil to also be utilized. I made an (admittedly shoddy) image to try and clarify what I'm saying.

Did a bit of research. Internet claims that typical air rifle mainspring has a force of 600-800N. Then went to look for a matching solenoid. Found one 24V model with a force over 800N along a 50mm stroke. Only problem is that the solenoid weights a happy 15 kgs. But I guess common air rifle performance could be achieved. Don't know how big highvoltage capacitor setup would be needed for that kind of force.

Force * distance equals energy. With all the losses I'd say the whole thing would need a rather large capacitor.
