Hiya guys...
So this morning i woke up to my mom asking me a bunch of questions about her laptop. She said that the start screen showed up red, and then on the welcome screen (Windows XP welcome screen) just turned off.
On a hunch, i took a monitor to use externally. Sure enough it works. There is something wrong with the LCD monitor on the laptop, but i have not much experience with them.
After booting, when i switch from the external monitor to the laptop's monitor, the laptop's monitor will show everything, in red, for a moment, and then turn black again. I can do this how ever many times i want. It is obvious that any circuit that processes the info for the graphics (I know nothing of GPUs!) is just fine, so i am thinking the small board in the monitor itself has something like dead IC or faulty wiring.
This is a refurbished laptop, it is a Dell manufactured around 6 years ago, according to my dad. We have had it for about 2 years. It is a Latitude D610.
Are there any common faults with these? Do the symptoms sound like something fixable? The screen has never been punched or anything, so i think the screen itself is fine.
My dad is probably going to buy my mom a new laptop, or at least i hope so. If so, there is a laptop in it for me, providing i can fix it . Or, i could always just use an external monitor.

I would think it is likely the screen is knackered. I had one that did a similar thing once, and the fault would occasionally clear itself if I opened and closed the lid a few times, though eventually it died entirely.
There is also the possibility that the plug for the screen has become dislodged, or that the wiring is damaged where it passes through the hinge.
Replacement screens can be had of evilBay quite inexpensively.
EDIT: A thought occurs, if you have the laptop switched on, and tilt the screen right back, can you see a very dim image, from the reflected light off of it? If so it is just the CCFL tube or inverter that has failed (often the screen will turn pink or red over a period of time, than fail.)

Thanks alot :D.
Yes, i can see the screen if i really try to look. My dad is trying to fix it, he is not going to have much success though.
If i have to, i will get one from eBay.
The kicker is that earlier today my mom said she was going to give it to me. After all they bought my little brother who only does Myspace (nothing that actually gets anything done) and stuff like that a brand new computer with more than 3Gb RAM (i have 500mb) and an insane graphics card. I am stuff with something that was refurbished 4 years ago (that means it is even older than 4 years)... And he has an LCD moniter and TV that are brand new. And he keeps clicking spam that gives him awful viruses. Well, now my mom says i will probably not get it. Even though she is getting on of those really small ones, whatever they are called. I request we make a 'smiley' with the hotkeys !pissed, will do for now.
Hehe, thanks for the advice. I will try to fix it anyway. My computer works better than the rest in the house since i keep it clean, so i am very happy with what i have. Just feel like blowing of some steam XD.
