hello all, I picked up a five foot drouge parachute used by the US Army at a Ham Fest in Fort Worth yesterday for $10. I thought about using it for a near space satellite balloon project I planned to do, as drouge parachutes can be deployed at much higher speeds and extreme conditions than normal parachutes (BTW: the max weight of a near space balloon by US Law is 12 pounds without a special permit, and the parachute is included in that weight). This particular drouge parachute, to my dismay, appears to be used for controlling drift of boats on moving water. Would this parachute still potentially work? Should I use it to create enough drag to deploy a normal parachute? I tried finding details besides the basics online, but this is all I could find.

I have some near-space balloon experience.
It might work. How heavy is it? Can you post a picture? Best way to tell is to tie a ~1kg weight to it and throw it off a building or bridge (with nobody below!) If it deploys fine there then it will work okay on a balloon. The size sounds about right.
