Hello,

I'm looking at these

Link2

I want to wire 10 of them in series, do you think that is a decent amount of power?
Also I plan to use a bank of camera circuits... cut down... Any ideas on wiring thoughs would be nice...

I just need to know if those capacitors will do well as a bank of 10

Energy = 0.5 * Capacitance * Voltage^2

At rated voltage that works out to 4.4 Joules per capacitor. Not a whole lot, and electrolytics are generally not great for pulse discharge applications because of high ESR and ESL, and poor tolerance for voltage reversal (which you will get when you discharge them through a coil).

I'm sure you could make something move with them, but it won't be amazing.

It's also going to be tricky to use camera circuits to charge them. If you permanently wire them in series, you will need to carefully isolate the chargers from ground and find a safe way to signal them to initiate charging. An alternative might be to charge them in parallel and use relays to rearrange them in series for discharge. Bit of a hassle. Better to build a dedicated HV charger.

ok... I intend to put it in an airgun... do you think I could get a simlar fire rate as one of them? It's dosn't have to be amazing but .... needs to be good...

idk, I've not done this before

To get around problems with voltage reversal, simply add diodes in anti-parallel with the capacitor bank.

you might be able to put a nail part way into a coke can with that energy if you design the gun very well (which i doubt you will on the first go), so id say dont get them, ebay normally has much bigger caps for that price. Id say aim for 150J +

No, don't buy those.

I got about 50 of those (no joke) for free at a drug store. Just go to their photo-development booth-type area and explain that your working on a science project and will benefit greatly if they were to donate the other wise useless circuitry within their disposable camera shells. Make sure you explain the science part, otherwise they will say no cus some places are required to recycle their junk.

Last time I tried it, they handed me the whole bin and said take as many as you want.

On another note, you probably won't get airsoft-like ROF out of ANY coilgun unless it's extremely advanced. I've only seen it once and the power/shot wasn't impressive. However, with a single shot design you will get enough power to provide good entertainment. My first real CG used 7 photoflash caps and could imprint the threading of a wood screw into drywall from about 20ft away.
