I am working with some 12KV 30milliamp NST's, and I need to make sure I have the required voltage and amperage for the project I am working on. I can disconnect the center tap so that I can reach the maximum voltage without floating it, but I don't know if I have the required current. I know these things are magnetically shunted so they cannot reach their maximum amperage for more than a fraction of a second, but getting through the tar to remove them would be extremely hard and greatly decrease the time I would be able to run it. I am still working on making a current monitor so that I can read the amperage at high voltages, so it would be greatly appreciated if anyone knows what the average current is that these things run on.

Roughly;
12 kV ac rms open-circuit continuous
30 mA rms short-circuit continuous

The magnetic shunts have the effect of making the secondary 'seem' to have a very large series inductance, in this case XL = 12000/0.03 = 400 kOhm
Assuming 60 Hz ac that's 1061 Henries effective.

If you remove the shunts you will easily be able to draw enough current to melt the secondary winding - so I advise you to leave the shunt(s) in place.

There is curve for operating voltage in NEON SIGNS Miller, S and Fink, D.G. New York (1935) McGraw Hill reprinted by Lindsay Publications ISBN 1-55918-034-x. Also mentioned is operating
open circuited is destructive. You might monitor the secondary
current by connecting a 7 watt 120 clear Christmas lamp in series
with EACH terminal and looking at the glow. Another tool is a KILL-A-WATT meter or one of its type, about $30. usually. Then you could see primary ams, watts and power factor as you loaded it in varios ways. Dont unhhook the centertap and do ground the case to the ground pin of your power plug.
