Controlled materials in an x-ray lab or HV transformer?

Merry Christmas, etc. !

I may be on the short list to get a free professional X-ray outfit: see Link2
The lot was posted on craigslist by a realtor, on behalf of the owner. My craigslist inquiry brought a questionnaire, and my response to that brought a phone call late on Christmas eve. Owner is very worried about his liability, if he lets somebody take it and it leads to a hazmat incident. Electrical transformer seems to be a particular concern.

Apparently the owner had contacted a company who deals in such things, and that company wants owner to -pay them- to properly remove the stuff. May have told the owner a scare story. That's not even counting eventual demolition of the lead-lined walls and safety window, in which I indicated an interest.

I said I thought the only materials that -might- need special handling (by law) were
* photo processing chemicals (anything worse than ordinary B&W darkroom chemicals?)
* electrical equipment containing PCB's (this was made in the 1980's and I told realtor to look for a no-PCB label. Not sure if that is as meaningful on a customer-serviced tank as it is on a capacitor).
* portable and/or built-in lead shielding materials. (I said whatever I didn't use would go in my next load for the scrapyard. That I would wear gloves & wash up before eating or smoking).

Am I missing something? Is spillage from a non-PCB transformer any worse than same volume of used cooking oil, aside from the smell?

p.s. Of course I hope the setup will go directly into service at another health care office. But better one of us than a simple profiteer who will dump the unsellable parts under a bridge. I don't want to take on a PCB disposal liability, having already brought home almost 10 lbs of mercury this month.

Hi Rich,

Perhaps the seller has confounded radiography with radiology, and so expects the unit to contain Co-60 etc, the lawful disposal of which, as per EPA and Nuclear Regulatory Commission, is very costly indeed,

Hello:

No worries, many "do do heads" think the X-ray tube contains radioactive material, which is the most likely reason in this case. I would save the oil, or give it away on the forum, just have them send the bottle and shipping, plus a couple bucks for your trouble. The oil in these units is normally in great shape due to low duty cycle use.

If you are sure the tranny has no PCB's then its no problem. If you have friend with a diesel car, then you can get rid of the oil this way. Normal transformer oil is like heavy diesel like ships run, when added 1-2 gallons per tank to a diesel car it will run great. Just make sure its not Silicon oil which is rarely used and only in small units. I still think its better to give it away though. My dad used to run it in our oil furnace at a 25% blend in Seattle, no smoke, no problems, just a warm house :)

Aloha....Lutz
