I'm just wondering if anyone here has actually attempted one and if it worked well. I figure it must be possible because the old tube tv's had to drive the flyback somehow.

The page is in Czech, but I hope the schematic is understandable
Edit: Translation of the schematic notes- The transformer has an air gap in the core. Everything needs to be properly insulated, it is possible to over 3kV to appear on the anode. And an important note from the text, the intrawinding primary and primary-feedback insulations must be able to hold off a few kilovolts. We use decimal comma instead of decimal point.

I was going to suggest using line output valves (US: sweep tubes) like PL509, which enjoyed a brief popularity in compact linear HF amplifiers some years ago, and would be much easier to use for someone unfamiliar with thyratrons.
The second link above is considered to be 'suspicious' by zone alarm so I didn't look at it.

On the schematic the empty socket DC anode and screen voltage will be about 1300, and 650 respectively. Valves driven to pecular modes of operation(barkhausen),coupled with unfortunate geometry in wiring might cause harmful interference.
