Hi all, I'm making a new coilgun, now 7 stages is ready, going to make ~18 stages at all. Projectile 8mm dia, 9,4g weight, speed ~53 m/s, ~13,5j. Caps 400v 390mkf

Looks impressive on the video. You're obviously getting some decent velocity out of it. Are you switching with IGBTs or SCRs?

What's your overall efficiency?

I'm using 40tps12 SCRs
efficiency is around 5%

You said you're shooting for 18 stages. So when the projectile gets going nice and fast toward the later stages, how are you going to shorten the pulse? Smaller coil? Less capacitance? Higher charge voltage (probably not the best option)?

I hope you get all those stages, I've always wanted to do the same but never got around to it.

Smaller coil, Less capacitance. Speed would not grow too quickly, max 3m/s per stage - thats why no need to short the pulse very much

For this time 12 stages are ready. I'm now using another projectile, 11,4g weight. Energy 22,05j, speed 62,2 m/s

You might want to use a less wide picture, barely fits here on a 2048 pixel wide screen . . . Cool project though keep up the work

wow that's impressive! Good job! What's your efficiency now? I found that adding a little bit of a delay on the trigger for the first stages improves performance. I just added a small capacitor across the output of the photogate; more capacitance the longer the delay.

Ended 18 stages. Speed is about 70 m/s, energy ~28j.
