If I have a 5v zener diode connected in series with a voltage source going through a capacitor, what happens to the current through the zener?

If current was in phase and the voltage exceeds 5v then current will go through the zener. If voltage is lagging current by 90, what happens? Does current only travel through the zener, backwards or forwards, when the voltage exceeds 5v?
