This year was a very poor showing but I managed to catch one of them. I saw 15 meteors in 40 minutes, half of them came from other directions than Leo which is a bit surprising.

Did anyone have better luck?

It was overcast here on the south coast, Bjorn, but I did get some brief bursts of VHF commercial stations in what I think was Belgium (the bursts were very short) which I put down to the Leonids.

Sifting through the rejects I found one picture with with a nice green plasma trail that is characteristic of the Leonids.

I saw about 10 with my daughter at 11pm in New Jersey. It was a very clear night.

We are now near the peak of the Geminids at the moment according to The Sky at Night, although I haven't ventured out yet myself for a look. Apparently Gemini is easily visible from the UK late in December evenings.

BTW. I have only ever seen 3 shooting stars, one of which was incredibly bright and couldn't have been missed by anyone that was outside and looking in vaguely the right direction! Has anyone else heard a crackling sound when seeing the meteor trail and it breaking up? I don't mean crackling on a radio or some electronic device, but actual acoustic crackling when your stood there outside? I just assumed it was the heated air, or the meteor breaking up. However, I was talking to someone at work about this, and they said that I must have imagined it as the meteor is still some distance away when it is visibly glowing. Therefore the sound would be delayed by many tens of seconds. Of course they are right, but that does not change the fact that I *thought* I could hear it!

I watched them here in florida. They were dissapointing. Probably saw 15 over a 2 hour period. I have seen some neat ones before though. I once saw a huge one explode! I was terrified at first before I realized what I saw. I have seen two explode, and another one fall to the ground. (Or at least make it below the tree tops). None made any noise at all. I even once saw a real UFO. Not to mean aliens, but some sort of object that had the local University professors buzzing for weeks and asking me all sorts of questions. It looked like a very colorful meteor that never hit the ground. Just continued to streak across the sky very quickly and then out of site. It had a trail and all, and didnt look like any craft.

It is a common illusion. I have heard it once too and it stopped the instant I realized that it was very far away and not fireworks. People often hear imaginary sounds when they see the aurora too. Another very common sound to imagine is the crackling in a TV when it is turned on, it is quite common for people to hear the sound even if the TV is unplugged or the remote control batteries are dead.

I saw a few Geminids but they were very weak.
