I have built a working boost converter for powering a florescent light from 12v. I am using a TL494 to generate a signal from about 10khz to 40khz (frequency guessed based on hearing), and a IRF830 MOSFET to switch an inductor in a boost converter type circuit. The thing works great, but the only problem I have is the noise it makes. I would like to increase the operating frequency, but when I do, I get less and less output the higher I go. By the time its out of my range of hearing, its barley even glowing. I assume this decrease in power is caused by the on or off times of the inductor getting shorter so I don't get as much power out. My question is, is the above therory correct? and in order to operate at say, 50khz does my inductor value need to get bigger or smaller?
I have tried 3 different inductors but all seem to suffer from this same problem..
