Phase angle Firing and CW voltage multiplier

I got a question,

How would a cockroft walton voltage multiplier react to a phase angle fired AC signal (60Hz)? To get to the point, would you be able to effectively control the output voltage of the voltage multiplier (no load)?

I gave it a try in pspice. I Use triac and pulsed its gate at the desired angle of the input sine wave (168v amplitude). First i used a resistor as the load and i got the correct phase angle fired signal. But, when i tried putting a voltage doubler as the load, it didnt work, the triac would not fire correctly. I read somewhere that the triac controlled circuit is made primarily for resistive loads. Are there any other methods of phase angle firing that would work well for the multiplier?

After i put a small (50ohm) resistor in parallel with the doubler, it seemed to work, but only for nF value caps.

I've built two phase angle controller circuits that I believe will work with anything. Including CW multipliers and so on.

The secret is "hard firing": you hit the SCR or triac with a stream of repetitive gate pulses during the whole time that it's supposed to be on, unlike a dimmer, which only gives a single firing pulse. You also derive the gate pulses from a separately powered circuit, again unlike a regular lamp dimmer, which is powered off the voltage across the triac during the off period.

I hadn't thought of "hard firing" the thyristor, ill definitely look into it.
