Hi guys,
I googled this problem to hell and I am still without a answer. sad I have a RCA T.V. that will reproduce audio correctly for a random length of time, then it will suddenly burst into white noise without apparent reason. mad The Picture is not affected at all. Unplugging it seems to quell the problem temporarily. To me it seems to be a component failure, but I am not use to the ins and outs of T.V. repair. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
John

Hi John,
Do you guys in the US have NICAM sound?
If so, sounds like a NICAM demodulator ic problem.or its associated crystal oscillator.
Here in the UK, we have NICAM and normal FM Mono sound, and if there's a white noise fault,by switching to mono sound indicates where the fault lies.

Sounds (?) like something is overheating;
switch on and wait for the fault
use freezer spray to cool components to find the faulty part.

Ok, Thanks guys
I have the T.V. open on my floor and it is very simple compared to other T.V.s I can post pictures if any wishes to see. I am going to start by testing the bypass caps of the audio I.C.s
In the worst case, that I can not figure out what is wrong.....................Dumpster driving anyone? amazed
Cheers,
John

hey, I was gonna suggest that before you took the TV apart to try different cables. You could have a faulty sound cable that has a short in it, that could be the culprit for the random white noise. If that doesn't work, then i'd just suggest taking the TV back and get a new one..(if it's new that is!) If it is a componant inside the TV.. chances are you'll spend more time looking at it trying to figure out what the problem is than it's worth. I myself just got a new Tv at home here. Our old one was a 20 year old Zenith! cheesey and it's would randomly cut to that fuzzy snow screen and have really loud static! lol so we got a new Sony Wega. Anyway, hope all goes well!

Remember to check the solderings, it is a fairly common problem. Bad solder joints can cause temperature dependent or random problems.

Hi,
If your are not equipped for testequipment on TV, maybe this is a suggestion :
Get an old VCR, remove the RF modulator (on a Sony betamax it's even externally removable). Put the module under power 12v, and search on the tv tuner for the correct channel, (uhf 36) then make a sound source of +- 1500 Hz, and feed the modulator. you can use a 555 or anything you have lying around in the shack.
The start tracing inside the tv, You will get your first AF just behind the tuner section. If the problem is heat related (bad component) , leave the TV running even if you don"t hear the signal any more comming out of the speakers, and continue the search. Best way to do the trace is with a Scope.
Of course always take caution of HV presence, some parts are Live in most old chassis.

Cheers
Luke
