Just to prove it can be done (since I can't get hold of the right gauge of aluminium wire anyway), I made a totally formerless coil:
First person to guess what the project was gets a cookie. This coil was A) wrong wire material, B) wrong dimensions, height and diameter, C) wrong shape... but I wanted to prove that the formerless coil could hold itself together. It's surprisingly durable.

They arn't all that hard, you wind a secondary like you normally would, but add a layer of waxed paper or somehting first. After a nice coating of varnish you are left with a formerless coil. Alternativley you can use the secondary in my vttc, which cuases the wire to get hot enough to expand the pvc ~1mm, so after cooling you can silde it right off
This coil is to be used as the remote half of the power source in a wireless lifter...

Yup, there's any number of ways to do it. I like the "expansion by hot VTTC" method especially...
And I'm afraid there's no "is" in it... it's a bad case of "this method WAS..." for the wireless lifter... but I can't find any aluminium wire of a small enough gauge. So grr. =)

Hi Mike. Thanks, it's nice to know somebody is reading... I wish more people would reply/critique, as that's the only way it improves ^^
If the losses weren't already negligible, yes, you could say it reduces dielectric losses to the former, but one could argue that the former has been replaced with polyurethane impregnation and thus there is no net benefit. The mass benefit is more obvious and significant however.
As for the CO2 lasercut former, the goal of that is a very high Q resonator capable of taking huge powers. Has anybody even seen it?

Yup, that's it... perhaps I should rename the thread (again) so people can actually understand that it's finished now... :P
Potential improvements I can see for it include: - adding some holes to the top of each slice to facilitate the mounting of electrodes, fastening of wire, etc... - making the slots twice as deep to better accommodate more wire, - including some kind of primary former as part of the design.
There's gotta be some minds out there with other ideas and additions =)
