Hey fellas,
I want to make a high current PSU out of this freshly gutted MOT. It's got 4 deep welds on each side about 2mm thick so it'll be quite an effort with a hacksaw.
The biggest challenge is drilling the welds on the base as I have already broken one drill bit trying.
I know the easiest way is probably to just cut the secondary but I kinda want to preserve all that precious wire :)
I'm looking for suggestions from anyone who's attempted this arduous task before.

Angle grinder. Cutoff wheel; HF has them. They're about 1/16" thick. Makes great cuts. Wear ear, eye, and lung protection when using cutoff wheels.
Don't use a grinding wheel. Those are thick and abrasive on the face as well as the edge. A cutoff wheel is thing and only abrasive on the edge; the face is only minimally abrasive.
Use the edge of the cutoff wheel (as if it is rolling along on the bottom side of the mot) to cut thru the welded metal.

You don't really need to remove the base that is welded to the I section. They don't interlock the EI sections so you can just take a hacksaw to the welds and pry the core apart.
