Well I managed to destroy my ATX psu. A thermistor blew up while my sstc was in operation, blowing up my GDT!? and all IC's as well as the psu.

Trying to make the best out of a bad thing I decided to scavenge the parts of the PSU, upon which I found a decent sized choke mounted in the encasing. Thinking I was going to get my hands on some decent awg magnet wire I proceeded to tear it apart.

Th

I am pretty sure I just discovered the first "fake" !?!?! choke in history...what? Why would anyone put a fake choke in a PSU?? I have basically a fresh transformer base so its not a total loss, but still, any ideas on this one?

Lol, how cheap! Does copper really cost that much? I think the PSU production plant is being ripped off by who ever makes those chokes. You'd better check that the iron isn't actually lead!

Anyway, Rok, it's a handy little core and bobbin if you wind to something of your own on it.

Wow, That's just horrible! Do you think it's possible they have a ton in stock, same looks, and a few happen to be fake, not coiled? Or do you think they just thought "Lets give those electronic people something to play with when our PSU explodes!"

Yes, Harry, it is not all bad. It is a nice core and bobbin. Assuming the core is actual iron. ;)

Judging by the way the bobbin itself is designed, I believe the supplier has an actual production line of fake chokes. The ridge used to hold the wire in place makes the bobbin useless for a transformer/choke without modification.

What do you guys think, a potential baby MOT? What gauge/wire ratios would you recommend? Maybe i'll make a baby SGTC out of it?

It's more likely to be an error of an automatic wiring machine, or provision for a mk2 version for sale only in some countries.

I think it's just a fake PFC. Passive PFC inductors has "a lot of expensive copper" inside so it's really good component for faking by chinese manufacturers to save some money tongue
