Hi

I'm looking for most efficient way to power up the capacitors for my coilgun

capacitors: 2 x 2200uF 400v wired up in parallel so it's 4400uF 400v

my goal is to get the voltages up to about 350v or so..

Right now I'm using an uc2845 IC do make a flyback DC/DC converter from 20-200v... but it takes about 6min to power up the capacitors to 200v sad

I work as an electronics technician, and has access to just about all electrical components (parts is not a problem) cheesey

also how do I make the most efficient coil for the gun, the barrel is 16mm in diameter (got copper wire in most of the AWG types)

thank guys...

You could just rectify the mains, that will output a max voltage of 340v (assuming your mains RMS is 240v like it is in the UK)

however i strongly recommend using two back to back transformers to limit the current if something goes wrong.

if you want it portable buy a 120v car inverter and with a series resistor use a capacitive dubler

TechNerd, use this scheme Link2
This device maked by that scheme Link2 charges caps to 400v with 60w power - it means that your caps will be charged in 6 seconds

Hi again...

I've changede the IC to an UC3845 *(from UCC3808) and made a new transformer coil with some bigger wires...

then I ran into a new problem, the diode between transformer and capacitor started to frie... now I'm using a MUR6040 so it should be able to handle the power...

buttom of it all now i'm able to charge the 4.4mF capacitor to 270v in about 2min...

another thing... how do I make the most effective coil

thanks guys...

It'll be way faster if you either use Llevellyn's idea or just go ahead and make a step up transformer from mains, unless you want it to be highly portable.

I rewound a 12v wall wart to a step up 320v autotransformer for 120v mains. Charge time is a few seconds for a bank that size and the current limiting is very good.

A good coil is roughly the same length as the projectile and will produce a very quick high current pulse. 12-16 ga is probably going to be your best bet, really you should look up barry's LCR sim and try to get it dialed in.

And 16mm is really huge, I would go for a thinner barrel, more in the range of 6-10mm

I would do a boost converter like this.

I use a line operated power transformer. An old large TV xmfr from a large CRT type TV will work good. Can be overloaded up to 500% for short duty cycles.
It should charge all your caps in 10-15 sec (max). I run a higher voltage and use a 1,200 Erms 2 Amp xmfr to charge all 5 stages of my machine in 10 sec or less.
