Hi everyone, most of us will know of the extraordinary red dust clouds, hail, and other meterorological anomalies now happening in Australia.

This thread is for members to post (a) news items about this extraordianry weather (b) personal experience of this weather in their location

so we all have an opportunity to follow it.

Thank you,

Harry.

Hi Harry,

Been lurking here for quite a while, but here's a topic that I have first hand experience of!

I live in Brisbane, and Wednesday started off a normal day but as the morning progressed the sky become increasingly opaque and yellow/orange.

The first attached image is a quick shot out the window at work, usually you can see cliffs across the river, but you can barely see the trees behind the hotel (white building). The second one is from today.

You could taste the dirt in the air, and now a few days later *everything* is covered in a fine layer of dust....

Now hopefully I can get my shed in order after a recent house move and get posting on some HV topics! :)

cheers

Jacob

I'm not in Sydney, so I didn't get the dust (but it was South Australian dust!), but the weather system that caused it passed right over. I believe it was a system of supercell storms, which is quite unusual for here. Not a huge amount of rain (the rain guage in my garden showed 30mm), but lots of lightning! And a couple of ground strikes quite close by (VERY loud), plus some hail (nothing like that which was further north however, supposedly golfball size hail.) There is also supposed to be possible snow today in the Mt Lofty ranges (Adelaide Hills area), which is a very rare occurance for this part of the world.

Cheers,
Jesse

Yeh - I know this is not Oz, but its "Pacific Basin"...

This is a shot I took from our HK Central office late afternoon as a typhoon was coming in - my 'plane back to London left shortly thereafter and as the wind speed increased and the signal level hit 8, gusting 9, I was sure that they would cancel...

But Cathay Pacific are made of stronger stuff - they decided to outrun the front and head East, then South, before heading back West for Europe...

It was one of the "more interesting" take-offs I've had! (hail drumming on the plane, visibility zero, howling winds...)

At least it makes using lasers much more interesting :)

Another dust storm, about the same magnitude, swept through on Saturday evening/night.

Now *everything* is truly covered in fine dust that would make an excellent substitute for silica gel!

So while moisture isn't a problem (for now), abrasives getting into everything certainly is an issue...

cheers

I thought it was looking like it was clearing on Saturday, apparently not! Back to the start again, if not worse ...
