I just completed construction of a Seebeck generator (completely copied design from Make magazine 15). I'm looking for suggestions to convert my average 1.8vdc into 5vdc. I found this chip Link2,C1,C1003,C1039,C1133,P1383 but 2v is peak I've ever generated and I don't want to count on it.

Not looking for a handout here, just some suggestions. Would you go microcontrolled boost converter? 555 boost? Any suggestions appreciated.

Basically I'm using a Peltier cell in reverse. Heating one side, cooling the other and using the generated voltage to charge my ipod. (I hope)

Thanks for any suggestions,
Dennis

I made a peltier termoelectric generator ages ago. I used a MAX856 chip Link2 to generate 3.3 V and 5 V. It started up at about 0.8 V and kept running down to about 0.5 V at reduced output power and voltage.

It requires few external parts but is a pain to solder without proper surface mount parts since some connections have a maximum length of about 5 mm.

Sparkfun has several ready built modules like this one: Link2

Thanks Bjorn, that sparkfun module is exactly what I was hoping to find. I guess my search technique is lacking because I tried to find something like this for a while.

Thanks again, I'll update with pics when its operational.

Dennis

edit:

Update! Bjorn's suggestion worked perfectly. My generator will happily run at 5v all day (as long as the candle burns.) Oddly I had to eliminate the 5v fan, I guess it was drawing too much current, as I could never get to full conversion when it was wired in. That's even better though, no moving parts. Thanks again Bjorn and I'll update with pics in a few days.

Here is the finished generator. I'm surprised the fan had to go but it's definitely more efficient now.

Also here is my completed nixie clock from a while ago:
