Hi all,

It's more like 'light-1.1' but its the first time I cranked it up to full voltage, and in the process, didnt kill anything, except my old venerable 300w variac, which released its magic smoke. (the thing is rated for something like 2 amps, and I had 7 or so amps going through it at the time, but its faliure may have something to do with my home made brush for it...).

Youtube isnt co-operating, so no vid yet, but here is a pic of the whole coil, and a frame capture from the vid:

Sparks are about 35cm, coil is 16x50cm and toroid is 30cm diameter.

Everything remains cool and un-exploded. Unfortunately, I cant run it in interupted mode, as when I do, I get primary-to-secondary sparks (I cant see where they are though, but I can hear them. So I'll have to wait till it gets dark). I cut them down somwhat with some plastic insulation, but not completely gone. But it works well in 'half-wave' mode. The sound it makes is brilliant too, VERY loud 50hz buzz. The caps you see in the pics are there for future CW mode; when in CW mode it pulls about 6amps at just 25v, so I havnt been game enough to go full power yet in CW or 'full-wave'.(I couldnt even go to 50%, because my variac was too small, and now its toast) At the moment the primary is tapped at 10 turns (the full amount), but everything in this coil is made with heavy connectors, so eventually I'll take the primary turns down for more power amazed

The goal of this project is to have a nice portable, high power, 'full feature' (CW, HW, FW and interupted) SSTC, so I'll post updates as I crank the power up.

Cheers,
Jesse

Alas, I spoke too soon,;

A primary-secondary arc turned into a big power arc and then poped the 20A breaker (but left the 15A fuse untouched...). Every thing seems to have survived, however, so I'll have to rethink my primary configuration before anymore attempts. I do wish I had the camera rolling when it happend though, it was rather spectacular....

Cheers,
Jesse

Looks great, very solidly built, and very clean!

As to the pri/sec arkover, it seems that using a flat plate perpendicular to the coils (ie parallel to the floor) directly above the primary works best at eliminating them. Although a good strike rail doesn't hurt either wink

That's a nice coil. I hope it still looks that good after your flash overs wink

Those flash overs are almost certainly due to your insane coupling. Raise your secondary (alot...) or make a larger diameter primary.

Haha yes I know, thankfully, as violent as the flashover was, it did hardly any damage to the secondary, the heat was absorbed by the plastic I had around the secondary as insulation: Link2
The flashover happened when I tried to start it directly from the mains with out variac.

I am in the process of building a new primary, in the meantime here is the vid of the run that killed my variac: Link2

Hehe, looks nice :D. Nice long sparks. How much current where you pulling. And how did the variac die? Obviously not a fuse...

To bad about that variac... Those arcs look a little thicker than "normal", what was your Fo and PW, or was that just half wave?
