Okay, so I slapped together a circuit without any regard for heatsinks on certain components, and realized this at the end. So my question is, are heatsinks necessary if I just submerge the board in oil? Basically, I want to know if oil can substitute proper metal heatsinks.

How long do you plan to dissipate heat? Air convection carries away the heat from heat sinks. How are you going to remove the heat from the oil?

So I just need to have a place where the oil can contact air or some sort of active cooling system?
Would a metal box containing the oil and circuit suffice (with, of course, something to prevent the circuit from coming into contact with the metal)?

Just dunking the circuit might save it if it is borderline overheating, but if the components needed a heatsink dipping them in oil will not solve the problem.

If you can circulate the oil it could help, but a heatsink would be a much better choice. The thermal mass lets you make mistakes more too :)

Alright. No point in an active oil circulating system over a few hunks of aluminum. Thanks for the info guys.
