For enthusiasts in the neighborhood of "Silicon Vallley", CA, there's a free technical lecture coming up at the monthly meeting of IEEE Photonics Society. For September it's "Virtual Tour" of the National Ignition Facility by Dr. Peter J.K. "Jeff" Wisoff of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
Two months ago the NIF zapped a hohlraum with 220 kJ of 350-nm radiation in 2 ns. Next year they are planning shots that could really ignite a thermonuclear burn wave in compressed DT. Technology developments included new lines for production of large scale laser glass and KDP crystals.

I'm hoping to go, and maybe learn details not evident at the excellent NIF website:

A interesting video on how they grow the KDP crystal... 
I'm wondering why they spin the crystal so much though?
