My co-works at that one retail store that is destroying America insist that the anti theft scanners work by detecting the field around a magnet and say that I am stupid for saying otherwise. I know that the scanners put out a EMF and listen for echos from a cap and inductor tank circuit in the tags. How would I find out what values to use to set off the alarm?

I guess this means you're not stupid for saying otherwise.

They wont beleive me unless I can replicate the alarm trigger in some way. The store I work at uses the acousto-magnetic system. Can this be triggered with an LC circuit?

The LC circuit would be fairly large as the fres is quite low (orders of kHz typically)

But since you work in the store, i'm sure you have access to the security tags.

If you're friends don't know how to read information on the internet, or require an actual demonstration to accept your explanation, then they are probably stupid to begin with.

So, just rig up a few springs and screws in any fashion possible. Then up your sleeve hide a working security tag. Then as you wave your arm with the springs and screws in the sensor area, it will activate.

Or better yet, just get a metallic marker and draw a coil on your hand and wave it in the scanner area (again having the working security tag hidden somewhere) This should really blow them away.

Then, go back to the store, and affix security tags discretely to your friends' backs.

:p

They are not that type of friends. By friends I mean co-workers that I get along with and prefer to be around as opposed to other co-workers. What really frustrates me is that for otherwise intelligent people they can be very unintelligent sometimes. The most notable of these people is 21, a pilot, certified mechanic, CompTIA certified network technician and a whole bunch more stuff that normally indicates intelligence.

Is it possible that the store could use multiple systems? We have special boxes that valuable merchandise resides in until they get to the register. Perhaps I should "accidentaly" drop(kick) the box and see what is inside the non-clear part...

They may be geeting confused by the fact that some types of tags are deactivated by a magnet, which shorts them out internally, but they are pretty much all LC resonant circuits for detection purposes
