Hi all.
I noticed that many of my problems are due to inadequate lighting as my overhead fluorescents are useless.
Thought "wouldn't it be useful if I had an adjustable pointing light that focussed on the workpiece" Current plan is to use a pair of small geared motors with Hall sensors to point a 10W LED with adjustable lens mounted on the ceiling, with a remote to control it. Possibly use the PCB from a dead model heli as the controller as it already has motor drivers.

I favor a long fluorescent lamp, on the underside of a top shelf. Shielded from direct light in the eyes, lots of diffuse light. Bright, reliable, cheap, energy efficient......

The problem with a point source of light tends to be shadows, and a remote control that you have to drive manually sounds like a real PITA. Now if your project was to have eye-tracking stuff so it would illuminate whatever you looked at ...
My bench light source is 4 short flourescents under a shelf, shielded from my eyes, to approximate to an area source of light to guarantee no shadows.

Skytron sells an exam light usually used in labor and delivery rooms. The heads are motorized and will auto-focus on a strobe light wand. So you just hold this wand where you want the light and it'll focus on it.
