Linear motor - lots of magnets inside shaft, coil on outside of shaft
Optical encoder strip at bottom

Any ideas for what to do with them? Something with lasers and an arduino perhaps...

You can use the optical encoder strip as a very coarse diffraction grating.
Shine a laser pointer through it and measure the (small) divergence between spots.
Then you can determine the encoder pitch from the laser wavelength, or vice-versa.

I don't think those have enough force for a 2 axis CNC, although you could try something hackish and make a mechanical VU meter...

Why not a 2 axis CNC with laser head as a engraving machine?
No force required! And you can even made PCBs with it... check this out:

Thanks for the ideas guys, I like the idea of a mechanical VU meter - especially if you attached an RGB LED to do the colours!

The encoder strip has the number 127 engraved on it so it could be 127 per inch. I guess the holding force would be similar to a stepper - easy to determine by hanging off a weight from the slider arm.

I think I'll hang on to them until I an think of a really good use for them

I would definately make some sort of positioner with them. Don't take them apart, they're more valuable intact. I think a micro mill would be really sweet!

Looking at the pictures, the linear encoder seems pretty coarse. After all, you can see the holes in the strip! I don't think it would give enough resolution for CNC work.
