I'm looking to buy some transformers very similar to GDT's normally used in tesla coil use for a school project that I am currently working on. I've made GDT's before with great success, however this time I would like to purchase several that would look a little nicer on a circuit board than home wound transformers. What should I be looking for? Any links to part numbers on DigiKey? I've been looking under the pulse transformer section, however I'm not exactly sure on the specs that I am looking for. If I have to, I'll wind my own but at this point a commercial offering would be great! BTW - the drain of the high side mosfets will be at +170V and the source of the low side mosfet will be at -170V so some insulation is required
Another question: What should I be looking for in a trigger transformer for a fairly large SCR (1.2kV, 92A ratings)? Trigger pulses will be ~15uS at a rate of 4kHz.

I believe I have read some members saying they bought commercial GDTs and they were always crap (huge leakage) compared to homemade ones. But that doesn't mean you couldn't have luck in finding good ones :)

What about an ordinary pulse transformer, from Murata, Eric? Most types don't cost much more than a few pounds or dollars.

I'm going to experiment in the lab a bit tomorrow, but I've been researching and I've found that GDT's don't work very well with waveforms with highly variant duty cycles. I'm going to talk to my professor a bit tomorrow, but I'm having a little trouble designing the mosfet drivers for a half bridge where the positive supply is 170V and the negative supply is -170V, therefore to turn the bottom mosfet on the gate must be at ~ -158V relative to ground, and the top one has to follow the output waveform from that half bridge. Complicated!!
