I'm having a bit of trouble finding a high permeability ferrite core in my scrap bin. I have a gray one here... its painted gray. Is this going to work? or do I need to search for a ferrite core...
I am building a CT for my Mini SSTC to replace the antenna.

You could always try it. In some ATX SMPS you will find a very small yellow core with useally a few windings on it and one wire going trough it, this is a CT, you can use those. But only small yellow cores, not big ones.

The ferrite toroids found in ac line common-mode filters (two identical windings) are usually high permeability (5000 - 10000) MnZn. Ideal for a C.T. to 100's kHz.
