Hello Everyone :)

For quite some time I have noticed the recurring need for a source of high power HF to drive everything from SSTC's, to large ferrite core HF high voltage transformers, in this and other forums. Then it came to me.....

All over ebay you can buy an inverter based, current limited HF driver, which puts out around 100-120 V at the full load of 20-50 amps, with an open circuit voltage of about 150-200V, all this at a frequency of about 20-50 KHz. On top of this the current is adjustable to boot :)

Sound interesting so far? Well I am talking about inverter plasma cutters, for metal working. While there are other SMPS devices like TIG welders etc, they tend to be "droopers" with the voltage dropping in proportion to the current drawn, thus less suitable. Here is my idea:

1. Buy a cheap Plasma Cutter for about $200- $350 USD on ebay, look for one with a nice Toshiba MOSFET, or quality name brand IGBT drive.

2. Perform the following: a. Disable the compressed air pressure sensor. b. Rewire the on switch from the torch head, to a home made control panel.

3. Disable the torch start HV boost (Unless you want to run a Kr YAG laser arc lamp in which case you just add a HV trigger circuit) then bypass the big output rectifiers if you want HF.

Now you should have an adjustable universal HF driver capable of over 4KW, which even has adjustable current limiting. All the hard parts are already done for you, and its all mounted in a nice case ready to plug in :)

I am posting this because at this time I cannot be the person to test this idea due to some family problems with my teenage daughter at home, which requires most of my time for now, so instead I figured I would post my idea in the hope that someone else will go YES!!!! and then share their findings :)

Please however use caution, at this power level there are often no second chances, but if properly done the results could be spectacular for many applications. Maybe also some of the the more savy readers could offer further refinements, reference the pratical execution of this idea.

My personal potential applications are:

1. To run my Nd:YAG lasers, using the rectified output to power the Kr Arc lamp, and to feed the HF directly into a VM to get high power 1-1.5KV to rapid charge the capacitor bank for my second Nd:YAG pulse laser welder, so that I can run it at up to 60PPS.

2. To use the HF output directly to feed my huge ferrite core HV transformer, it has two 120mm U cores with an 20mmx20mm cross section so it should handle the power, at least to 20 amps by my calculations. My only question here is if it will be necessary to design some type of matching network?

Thank You to Everyone.......Aloha, Lutz :)
