Every telsa coil of mine (and nearly every other project I've ever built), has been a quick lash-up on the bench, operating for a week at most, then to be dismantled and put away for ever. So lately, I've decided to build something permenant, and something that i could show to other people by simply getting it out and plugging it in. So this is my next (and first permenant) tesla coil.
The progress so far:
This coil is going to be a high powered continuous wave coil, pumping as much juice through as possible with a full bridge of Fairchild 40n60's. I'm also in the process of making a nice stand/base for the coil, something every other coil of mine has lacked. The secondary itself is 16.5cm diametre and 45cm winding height wound with awg24. This gives a resonant frequency of about 250Khz with a 30cm toroid, perhaps a bit high, but i had the wire already so I used it. I thought I'd try my skills and make a verticle copper tube primary, but it turned out a bit sloppy, (the bad side is turned away for the photo ), and the primary to secondary clearance isnt as big as my instinct tells me it should be......but I will have to wait and see....
I'll post progress as it happens, but theres not likely to be much until i finish exams.

Looks like a nice start. Though I'm a bit worried 40n60's are quite slow and running them CW would only increase the thermal losses. Think they will get hot and burn up (depending on the power level).
I also agree that the primary sits way too close to the secondary coil. It's better to start with a higher clearance to be on the safe side. If you decide to use this current setup I would test it with a very low bps and on time to see if it arcs over.

Don't overlook the possibility of using reinforced concrete, lad. It's not something often suggested here, but the concrete, filled with earthed wire mesh, will set wonderfully inside a plastic sandwich box, which you then cut away when the concrete has set.
Advantages of concrete are:
Economy Retaining Bolts may be set into it whilst still wet. Good casting quality when cast inside a plastic box Can be brought to a good finish with a grinder and filler compound and then attractively painted (with suitable concrete paints)
Most of all, its weight at the base gives useful stability to a structure.
