This is a continuation of the thread "nice hot blue laser-like burning beam" on old.4hv.org --
Psyko created the idea of it and i shall give a brief overview of what is happening. (see pic)
I don't have a camera yet so I can't take any pics of my set-up
I use a 30 gauge insulin needle, 96% v/v industrial grade methylated spirits and a 20ml syringe. It burns relatively cleanly with little droop of the blue jet (because the liquid falls). There is only a few drops of methylated spirit (metho) of residue.

All I can think of is the night on IRC when aonomus was fiddling with a butane flame thrower of this configuration, except the needle on the front shot off. It is always a good idea to make sure little accidents like this are well guarded against in design.

Once I pressed the needle way too hard, and it flew off. A moment later, a 5in dia. fireball was just an inch from my nose!

I opened the valve too quickly, the butane is under pressure and the needle released a spray of liquid butane until the gaseous head pressure decreased enough to slow the release.

As you can see, sometimes when i press the syringue very hard, the metho vaporises and hence the flame flares. Constructive feedback or comments welcome.
By the way, the 25g needle wastes a lot of fuel, as i have not criped the needle tip yet. Should I?? The 30g needle burns almost perfectly with around 10 degrees of droop only I must have found the perfect formula for the "psykosabre". I am considering changing my design to a 10ml syringue to give more ydraulic advantage, so there will be higher pressure and EVEN LESS DROOP!!!

I would say :
the thinner the nozzle the better. pics with 30g are quite good, with no flame. Bigger nozzles will give flames. I used something really hair sized
bigger the nozzle higher the fuel consuption : go for thinner. I was able to run few minutes. Almost 5, if i remember good.
higher the pressure longer the blade. Of course , with my thin nozzle the blade was not too long, but perfectly beautyful. I should revive it with extreme pressures, but I don't have ideas.
higher the pressure, higher the velocity of the liquid, and higher the rigidity of the blade. It swung like a charm.
I didn't understand how you would use "heating" ?
cool pics, but go outside and don't burn the house. If the needle pops out ! then good bye !

OK, so i will use a 10ml syringue for a greater hydraulic advantage, hence higher pressure, but I might still stick with a crimped 25g with heating (read below), however, the 25g has a kind of sentimental value, so I dont have the heart to crimp it
Heating --- if you put a syringe in the candle's blue flame, the needle will heat up and give a pop sound. That means the alcohol boils into vapor and explodes. Then there will be a mini jet torch as the heat spreads and boils more alcohol. 30g can't do that as the needle is too short --- the plastic body will melt ! So only 25g can do that. But with such a puny flame, i don't thing it has any effect on flame length(see the part where i want a bunsen burner ... i want it for heating too... hehe)
Actually, some of the sabre became yellow because the yellow flame went to "contaminate" it -- just like surface tracking of electricity So i seriously should get a bunsen burner to see how yellow the flame actually is ... sponsor anywhere
Psyko, isn't it that the smaller the needle, the less fuel consumption, the less pressure you need to exert for a straight beam, the shorter the beam, and the larger the needle, the more fuel consumption, the more pressure you need to exert for a straight beam, the longer the beam
