Ive been using FEM 4.2 and DXF files for my high voltage field study (its 2D only), especially in the HV measurement threads. but I'm needing a 3D capable program now.
Do any of you have your own favored program? I did find this one :

Apparently there are freeware "student editions" of some commercial software available (with reduced functionality and capability). I don't know if these will meet your requirements, but here are two possibilities:

I spent a year running sims using Ansys Maxwell where I worked. Pretty capable software but a steep learning curve, and an even steeper price. Can't help with advice on free programs, but should you find yourself in possession of Maxwell, then I can help. BTW I hope you have some serious hardware to run your sims - 3D takes a lot of resource. Maxwell would regularly bring my 32Gb i7 to is knees. Used to set up a few sims on Friday and hope they'd be finished by Monday.
