hmm... well it seems that someone reads the medical journals. that article was only published a few months ago.
Comments?
it would seem that the best LEDs for this would be the old SiC "sky blue" type,

obviously the best results could be obtained by selecting diodes from a "bin" using a spectrometer, to select ones closest to 470nm.
i also recall near IR light being "medically useful" for treating retinal damage, DARPA found this out.
