hey there. recently i saw an ad in the local newspaper, some guy wants a LOT of trees cut down on his property. if i cut it, i can keep it.
i was wondering if you guys had any ideas how i can generate some electricity from burning the wood? i was thinking something like a steam engine or maybe a heat powered pump that pump water into a water tank a few feet up and simply use a watermill.

but to be honest, i think there is more money saved in using the wood for heating water for bath or househeating.
As said, get a wooden stove and save some cash in the winter. Thats how i heat my house.
To turn heat directly into rotational energy, then a sterling engine would be a good choice, they are simpler and probably cheaper than steam turbines.

Another option is wood gas/syngas, essentially you heat the wood to the point where it breaks down into CO, H2 and H2O, and you burn the CO gas. If you can do welding, you can build the furnace to burn syngas and pyrolyze the wood to syngas, and then pipe the syngas into a generator.
Keep in mind you will need to filter the gas otherwise you'll foul your engine with soot/tar/thick black gunk.

i have more than enough wood to both heat my house, sell and still have enough for several years. i was hoping i could charge a car battery with a wood burning setup, but even lighting an LED would be nice.

If you make electricity you have the same amount of heat available to heat the house. You have waste heat because the conversion is not perfect, and any electricity you make is turned to heat inside the house unless you sell it.
If you only need a fairly small amount of electricity you should use a peltier element. It would by far be the simplest method. You can get normal high temperature peltiers that can be 10% efficient in converting heat flow into electricity. For example:
