Hi all! Recently I obtained a coherent laser head . It works fine but I noticed a small spot of light next to the proper spot. It's weak but clearly visible. It's about 1-2cm from the proper spot in about 3m distance from the laser aperture, this is how it looks like:
I wonder if this is a trifle or a serious damage. The aperture is clear so I think it's not the problem. The head is powered from a dedicated controller.

It looks like a reflection off of something, which could be a sign of things being knocked out of alignment (but really its probably a manufacturing defect, which might be related to why you got it). It is also possible that the laser is lasing in a slightly tem01 mode, and tweaking the temperatures/currents might make it go away. Are you using the matching controller for the laser?

Yes, I'm using dedicated analog controller . This laser has been working in a computer-to-plate system. The guy who sold it to me had also other parts from that machine so I think he just disassembled for parts so the laser might have been good.

If the laser head was dismantled, it could be out of alignment. DPSS lasers need careful alignment. Did you get this on ebay? Ask the seller LOTS of questions about lasers before buying to make sure they arent selling you junk. Matt

The head hasn't been dismantled, the case lid is soldered and it looks to be in good condition. I didn't buy it on ebay and It was so cheap that I couldn't complain even if the laser head case was empty :P Thank you guys for your response :)

Satellite beams like that are not uncommon, and wouldnt normally be considered a defect. Its probably a secondary reflection off of the output window. It is definitely not mode related.
