Hi

I Have built plasmaman's plasma speaker and it was working fine. I had recently changed the TL494 IC chip and it contined to work fine. All of a sudden though the sparks started to become very noisy and flapping. it drowned out the sound of the music. no matter how close i bring the two wires together the spark buzzes. i cannot achieve a soundless spark. I tried adjusting the pots but to no prevail. Can somebody please help me.

This is what the spark looks like now http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Y5DZtMYyXw&feature=channel_page]

The schematic of the circuit is here http://www.instructables.com/files/deriv/FSN/TLXV/FMMD1ALS/FSNTLXVFMMD1ALS.MEDIUM.jpg]

Mind you this is what the sparks USED TO LOOK AND SOUND LIKE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmYdjXcgBss&feature=channel_pagel]

HELP would be much appreciated

Thanks

I see you "changed" the electrodes, this can have an impact on the arc stability.

If changing the electrodes back does not help, I guess some component got damaged, try replacing the 494 chip.

It makes the same kind of sparks with the electrodes. If the chip was damaged then would it still work? i am running 14v through it from batteries. could the MOSFET be damaged?

Yes, these chips often fail partially and only some functions become "degenerated".

Of course the MOSFET can be damaged.

what frequency are you running it at? It could be that when you changed the tl494 chip the frequency got messed up. It should be running at around 100khz.

looks like something in schematic is dead( maybe tl494)
try to replace it with new tl494

The schematic has something wrong. Pin 9 of the TL494 is the emitter of a driver transistor, that has the collector on pin 8. There is nothing in the schematic to discharge the gate of the MOSFET and turn it off. Add a resistor between pin 9 and ground. 1 kOhm is probably enough. And make it sure that the circuit is grounded.

Pin 10 should also be shorted to pin 9 in order to parallel the internal drive transistors.
