I am not sure where it happened but somehow my lcd screen on my ipod got smashed and is all black, they will not repair it unless for 377 dollars more than a cost of a new one, i am asking if it would be possible to put a new lcd on there and if it will be feasible to do, also has anyone here opened up an ipod?

[Mod edit: changed title. Please try to be descriptive.]

Depends if the LCD display is off-the-shelf or proprietary. My guess is that the LCD is custom and you probably wouldn't be able to get one. Since its already broken and there is no warranty, i would go ahead and open it and see if there are any part numbers on the LCD and try to match them up with a manufacturer.

Some options:
1.) Find out what g1/g2/g3/g4/mini1/mini2/nano/photo/color/g5/... you have. Note the LCDs differ model to model. Then e-bay may give you some replacement options.

2.) Apple once was excellent with their warrantees (not anymore.) If it is a defective nano you may find a service replacement form on the apple site. (IIRC it’s a PDF buried in the site)

3.) Get the iPod remote.

4.) Mount ipod (/dev/sda1 with hotplug) under Linux and blind install ipodlinux, agetty and the modified sh binaries. Set-up either a fire wire network link or RS232 adapter link. Install and run MPD to access over a telnet terminal interface.

5.) Search for the TTS thread at ipodlinux Link2 As people are building an Audio Only interface for the blind. The thread handling and network over firewire currently sucks -- but an Alpha should be available to the public in a few months and will be posted on the site along with a secret project currently in beta -- check here in June: Link2

Cheers,

There are a few different places online that sell LCD's, but for the most part they're about $100 a pop, and they vary by generation. There's been about 6 or 7 total used for the large sized iPods.

If its a nano, you're kinda screwed. that LCD is soldered in, however Apple supposedly is warrentying them, since alot of people had problems.

Me: My car won't start
Carbon_Rod: Install AutoLinux on it
cheesey

(I can't really talk here, I installed Rockbox on my iRiver MP3 player and prefer it to iRiver's own firmware)

I would definitely try to get another iPod of the same kind that's broken in some other way but still has a good LCD, and swap the LCD. I've seen quite a few iPods with dead hard drives going cheap on fleabay. It shouldn't be too difficult and you'll learn a good deal about taking things to bits and putting them back together again :P

I'd go for getting a dead one on ebay and replace the screen yourself. I myself have done quite a few "repairs" for my friends, and now have quite a collection of parts(screens, hd's, wheels, motherboards, flash chips..). Post what generation and what kind it is and I'll see if I have a spare screen.

it is a 30 gig video ipod and it would be great if you have one, how do you get inside it though?

Post a picture of your dead ipod screen while booting from a key combo Reset.. (Who knows with luck it may just be the connector pulled free.) Search battery replacement instructions (for your exact model) for details on how to open your ipod without damage.

btw: That quote should read ‘ “My car won't start” because it runs embedded XP with remote shutoff from OnStar. And as a bonus I get a free fuel economy to horsepower trade-off -- which is great for people not hauling any load in their truck ‘

In reality my response would be -- “Ha Ha!” 8-D

Did you get the FLAC codec for rockbox too?
