PLL 4046 with Flyback xfmr

Has anyone heard of using a PLL (like the 4046) to drive a flyback? I'm having trouble with it finding the resonant frequency. It tends to want to track a little above its own default oscillation and the phase adjustment raises/lowers the frequency, it doesn't shift the phase. I tryed several different antenna configurations (including wrapping a wire once around the core) and all seem to have problems. To test the circuit I hooked it up to a square wave signal which it had no problem tracking and the phase adjust worked fine. Perhaps a flybacks RF is to attenuated?

What is the purpose of this? You can hit the resonant frequency only with open circuit output, in which case it increases the output voltage to insane levels, often leading to arcovers or destruction.

When you start drawing sparks, the secondary C gets loaded by the arc so that almost any resonant effects disappear. It is impossible to auto-tune to any "resonance" when drawing and arc.

Good to know, thanks Dr. Kilovolt. So I'll stick to the PWM's for arc draw from flybacks. To answer your question the purpose is audio modulated plsama.

Even without any load, I have never observed significant resonances in a flyback transformer.

They seem to happen with bridge drivers to much higher extent than with single-swith ones. It is perfectly possible to destroy the transformer with half-bridge when you hit the resonance or its sub-harmonics. The voltage can rise many times its normal value.
