Hello guys i am an electronic student and a newbie in projectile accelerators. I wanted to start one of these projects and was looking for a cheap source of capacitors. I found some on alibaba for prices like 1-10$. The specs are 6800uF 400v packing over 500 joules each. How many would i need to get for a coilgun which can pierce a cola can? I know this depends on efficency but im asking for a rough estimate. Im aware of the dangers of this projects and any help would be accepted. Thanks guys.

I've built a coilgun from 8 photoflash capacitors, and 4 camera charger circuits. those were free I asked a photostore if I could have any old disposable camera's. I made a coil 300mm long and 8 layers of 20AWG enameled wire. The projectile was 300mm long and 5mm diameter. The tube was 6mm inner, 7mm outer diameter.

The energy was 330v 1000uf.
The coilgun can shoot straight through 2 cola cans.

I managed both sides of a cola can with 80j (and terrible construction)

It seems to take a lot less energy than i thought. I will still try and get more energy depending on the price and i mite go to a photographers and get some disposible cameras. Thanks for the info

but they will be used, and might have a screwed up dielectric. making them worse. but there is always reforming.

Unless badly abused (overheated) old large electrolytics seem to never die!
Worst case is as you say reforming may be required.

For those that don't know this is just slowly bringing the caps up to full voltage by using a series resistor of typically 1Kohm.

I have several electrolytics that are older than many members of this forum !
and the esr is still low. (I use an esr meter)

you will never find cheap new capacitors, ebay etc is the best your going to get. From my expirience though, as long as you buy from a good ebay seller the caps will be as good as new.

its actually because people buy them used, that they cost so much. because the retailers need to sell them at a higher price to even make a profit. for example, a brand new CDE capacitor, 2100 uf and 500v cost 180 dollars. each. i got some of those caps free via samples. 5 actually.
