You should be able to find a cylindrical lens at at the output which can be removed fairly easily.

In any case, if you just want a lot of cheep power check out ledshoppe Link2 their pointers are kind of hit or miss, but of the 2x 50mw pointers I bought one put out about 20mw the other 65mw so for $25 I can't complain :)

Yup, extracted and replaced with IR blocking filter from surplus webcam.

Confirmed no detectable IR output at aperture.

I did however take some nice pictures of the guttage, reckon its worth posting 'em?
