I have viewed this site for several years ,this is my first post
I need a duty cycle and frequency variable flyback driver for some of my HVrelated experiments. I want to build this circuit but I don't know if it works well or not.
I'm not sure if SG3525 is easy to buy in Taiwan or not .Are there any replacements?
I have built several flyback dirvers but some of them only produce very small arc,others damage 555s very often.

I believe it does, this was my first version of the "quasi resonant" driver...
Later I found it is better to put the capacitor across primary (not the FET itself) and the supply voltage can be increased up to 35V for extreme output voltages.
Here is the simplified driver with some comments: Of course that you can exchange the 555 for the SG3525 and have a variable duty cycle.

yes you can use a Schottky, its purpose is to discharge the gate fast and charge it slow, otherwise the FET could be damaged by the resonant capacitor discharging into it.
