I need to remove all of the flesh of a coconut so I can use it as a project box. Does anybody know of any ways to get the flesh out without damaging the coconut?

haha this has got to be the weirdest question Ive seen on this forum so far. I don't think there is an easy way to do it. Maybe just use a dremel tool and grind it out. Maybe you could cook it out in the oven? Or boil it.

Well I doubt the dremmel idea, I broke the cutting bit and 2 cutting wheels opening it, when I put the first one in the oven it got about 5 horizontal cracks and was ruined, boiling might work though.......

Inside there is the white part, and behind that the shell. Between there is actually a thin brown layer. Put a life in between, and it comes of cleanly. To open a coconut, hammer it while rotating it.
Yay for indian's =)

To remove it all?
Try a bed of ants.
It works for cleaning off bones, it ought to work for a coconut.

Lye (NaOH) treated coconut fiber is a cheap alternative for some plastic fillers.

I wonder if anyone has ever tried boiling lye water in a coconut to make soap.
Remember to wear protection, as it probably works for dissolving eyeballs too.

However, I agree ants will clean anything down to the bone....
Finally a positive use for fire ants...

Cheers,

Yes, people make coconut soap. People make soap from any sort of fat or oil. Anyone ever see fight club? lulz

I wouldn't recommend using lye. It would be easier to use a sharpened spoon to scrape the flesh out. You can sand it up to remove everything.

If there are any traces of coconut oil left, it will go rancid and smell funny. You can probably buy cleaned cocounts online.

There's no way to get the meat out of a coconut without damaging it. At the very least you need to drill a hole in it.
If you cut it in half with a saw then it's easy just as RP181 says (and the stuff tastes good too).
I don't think lye would work very well- it would dissolve the fats but leave a lot of the fibre behind. (and I'm pretty sure that it would do a better job of dissolving eyes than dissolving coconut).

I'd go with the sawing technique and then glue it back together. It should glue pretty well.
