The SCR clamp thread and a question

Hello Folks,
Ihave not posted here in a year or so, but have been reading from time to time.
The topic of the SCR clamp is exactly what I was looking for.

You see I have a number of hockey puck SCRs and was trying to test a couple of them.
I have always used large stud SCR's previous to this.

So after testing a few and finding them all bad, I realized something must be wrong with my method.
I was just using clip leads and a load and the firing voltage. No clamp.
Then I see all the concern in the SCR Clamping post, and wondered why?

I understand the reasons from a IR loss perspective, but it seems that there is more to it.
Is there a pressure sensitive contact inside the puck?

Is that what its all about. Cuz after squeezing my SCRs ... they all work.
It may sound stupid but I have never used this style before.
Is this actually designed into the SCR?

Yes the clamping force is necessary, because there is nothing internally holding the outer electrodes to the inner silicon puck--the clamp provides the force to do that. Without the clamp you will get get a week (or nonexistant) connection that can also damage the die by causing current imbalances.

Needless to say, clamp your pucks!

Thanks for that information. Having never used pucks before, I just did not know that.

It seems like there would be more information out there about this topic, but my searches revealed nothing.
