I just obtained a ton of nice looking flybacks. I've tested them all with a 18W CFL driver and they all seem to be working. I didn't get very big arcs with the 18W driver though. Now if only the 2n3055's I ordered would arrive I could make a proper driver. The 2 large vintage disc flybacks have external rectifiers that I can easily attach or take off depending on whether I want AC or DC output. I also found a medium sized vintage flyback, 3 small disc flybacks and various modern flybacks. One of them is huge/

Nice flybacks you got there.

BUT you should really think another driver. You wont get much power with 2n3055.

Something like ZVS would be better.

Yea, the 2n3055 driver sucks. Very low power, and a ton of heat. The 2n3055 will have to be on a heatsink. If you need one, i have one i could sell to ya. It is large, so can dissipate a lot of heat. which the transistor will make.

I also have some nice 5 watt resistors with a value good for the driver, and i have one 2n3055. I also have some nice enameled wire. This is good because some flybacks do not have a large enough winding window for thick insulation. This stuff is around 18 gauge, double build wire thickness. I also have some transistors that would work better than the 2n3055 with no modifications to the circuit. They are 9 amp, 100-200 volts. I have quite a few (about 12). Also, these have very high gain, so they will turn on faster/more complete, and they will surely heat much less than the 2n3055. I have tried them before, and they had better sparks, and a ton less heating. The heatsink can fit both 2n3055, and to-220 packages(which are what these transistors are).

Do not expect much more than 18 watts from the driver. A ZVS is very very simple, and can pump insane amounts through a flyback with high enough voltage. At about 40 volts input, i kill flybacks very quick. I killed one in 2 seconds. With 12-24 volts, the flybacks should have nice lives.

Oh, how dare you tempt me with those flybacks :P You should make a twin zvs driver for those 2 matching flybacks.

I'll probably make a zvs driver after messing around with the 2n3055's a bit. For now I just want to start with something simple. Couldn't I parallel a bunch of 2n3055's for increased power? I could mount them on a large finned heatsink with a CPU fan for cooling.
