I am trying to rectify a homemade high voltage transformer, powered by a ZVS. The output is around 6kv judging by the distance the arc starts, which would put it at around 116ma.

The question is, could 1n4007's rectify that high of frequency? It is an old flyback core, and .68uf capacitor for the ZVS driver. I would think they are much too slow, but i have them and have no fast high voltage diodes.

I won't use the 1N400x diodes for anything over 1kHz, they are completely unusable at SMPS frequencies. You can get UF4007's (very good, bit more expensive than 1N's) or BA159's (sometimes as cheap as 1N's)

In my ZVS Driver I used 1n4007, it was working 50Khz with no problems, but no more than that, so for SMPS is good to get the UF series.

They MIGHT work (although badly) for signal transfer at 50kHz, but they will be extremely inefficient when rectifying HF power, anything from 50% to 99% will be wasted as heat cheesey

One page Link2 I found with google Link2 suggests 30uS reverse recovery time for a 1n4xxx series diode.

Actually, I have pretty good experience with these diodes. They might be better then you would expect. No problem rectifying frequences above 3kHz... (reminding my old project of CW multiplier which worked at 3kHz with strings of 1N4007) Link2 however, 50kHz sounds too much for me

If you are rectifying very fast things, you could use a synchronous rectifier, which is just a mosfet used for rectification.

Well, at 6-10kv, there is no room for error. If these diodes are not going to work well at 50khz continuous at near their full rated voltage, there is no since in trying.

Yep, try the UF4007 or even the UF5408 (here at the cheaper one) its not much more expensive than 1N series but its a Ultrafast one.
